Lonely Broads: Where are the Women at SXSW?

SXSW

While I have yet to attend the famous (or infamous) South by Southwest conference, it’s one I’ve been curious about. One thing holding me back? It has a reputation for not being particularly female friendly in terms of speakers and sessions offered.  There seems to be the feeling on the part of some past attendees that the reason for that is because it’s considered a technology conference (read: boys) rather than a blogging conference (read: girls).

Things are getting better. According to this infographic, the male/female divide at SXSW is one I’d like to see on Capitol Hill.  Well, I’d rather see 50/50, but this would be a move in the right direction.

Female Representation at SXSWi

One of this year’s speakers specifically addressed this idea in her SXSW presentation — Jessica Lawrence of New York Tech Meetup had a few things to say about whether there really is a tech ambition gap.

Ambition gap? Where have I heard that before?
