We’re Not “Post-Racial” Yet

Freedom RidersThe ugliness of where we are when it comes to racism in America has been on full display in the news with the tales of Donald Sterling, the recently ousted general manager of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Journalist Charlayne Hunter-Gault, formerly with PBS, says the long-tolerated behavior of Sterling (such as telling his girlfriend that she shouldn’t be inviting African-Americans to Clippers’ games) is one of the reasons she’s writing a book about the history of race in our country for school-aged children, because we all need reminding about the fight for civil rights, and the work that still needs to be done:

I love that we are much less bigoted than when I was a child. I remember separation of bathrooms, drinking fountains and other public spaces. It grieves me that the welfare system has caused a monumental breakdown in the black families, leaving 70% of black babies to be raised without their biological fathers involved in their lives. Schools are blamed for not teaching these children what they need to know to succeed in life, but the schools cannot be parents to children from dysfunctional families. I am always thrilled to see those that are able to succeed and I hope and pray that more of their community will realize the depth of harm that comes from broken families.
